Description

Between 1877 and 1944 Sonoma County officials buried more than 1,500 bodies at what was known as the Old County Cemetery until it was renamed Chanate Historic Cemetery. The departed had died poor or had no known family, or they were Chinese and wouldn\'t be accepted at Santa Rosa\'s other graveyards. \n\nThe graves that filled the 1.5 acre patch across from the county hospital were marked not with headstones, but with numbered concrete \"soup cans.\" Records reflecting the names of the dead were scattered and incomplete.\n\nIn 2003 Santa Rosa resident, Jeremy Nichols, a cemeterian, set out to determine the names and stories of the people buried there.\n\nJeremy eventually found records of 1,328 names which have been placed on four bronze plaques attached to ten ton boulders.
