Description

From: http://parishes.rcda.org/stanthonyofpadua/PDF/Cemetery Brochure 2017.pdf St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery, the oldest Catholic Cemetery in the City of Troy, NY, is located on the east side of Oakwood Avenue, across from the Oakwood Cemetery. Long before the land on Oakwood Avenue was bought for St. Peter’s Cemetery, the parish of St. Peter’s had land in Mt. Ida Cemetery. According to Arthur J. Weise, M.A., “Troy One Hundred Years, 1789-1889”, the city, on January 1, 1832, purchased twelve and three tenths acres of land, to which was given the name of Mount Ida Cemetery, on the south side of the PoestenKill, and east of the road to Albia. On February 5, 1835, the city sold one hundred and thirteen perches of it to the trustees of St. Peter’s Roman Catholic Church, which is now know as the Old Catholic Burying-Ground. On February 11, 1858 approximately thirteen acres, opposite and east of Oakwood Cemetery, were purchased from Thomas Sausse. In 1898 and 1915 more acreage was purchased to create the current location of St. Peter’s Cemetery.
